Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel 7 Pro beat iPhone 14 Pro as fastest 5G phone
Apple was a latecomer to the 5G market and the first 5G iPhone, the iPhone 12 series, arrived in 2019, a year after the 5G network was commercialized. However, the company has since released three series of iPhones, all of which support 5G. Since the iPhone 12 series, Apple has improved the 5G speed of its iPhones. The speed of the iPhone 13 5G was pretty average, but the speed of the iPhone 14 is better. At one time, the iPhone 14 Pro held the title of the “fastest 5G mobile phone” in the United States. However, due to software updates and optimizations, the competition is intensifying. Ookla recently released its mobile performance report for the fourth quarter of 2022. In the US market, the iPhone 14 Pro lost the title of “fastest 5G mobile phone”. This device is now being replaced by Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Google Pixel 7 Pro.
Apple retreats, Google demands space
According to the fourth quarter mobile speed test report, the median download of the iPhone 14 Pro Max was 133.84 Mbps. In addition, the median download speed of the iPhone 14 Pro was 130.14 Mbit/s. These mobile phones are now ranked third and fourth respectively. In the fourth quarter, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 came to the throne with a speed of 147.25 Mbit/s. Google’s latest Pixel phone, the Google Pixel 7 Pro, comes in second with a download speed of 137.11 Mbps. In fifth place is another Samsung mobile phone, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with a download speed of 124.83 Mbps.

From the graph, the download speed and latency of the five models above are relatively close. In terms of downloading, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has the fastest download speed and the least latency. When network speed is categorized by mobile phone brand, Samsung’s median upload is 79.43 Mbps and download is 9.88 Mbps. In this regard, Apple will lag behind, as its median download speed is 72.62 Mbps and upload speed is 8.69 Mbps.
The iPhone 14 Pro series took the first place in the 3rd quarter of 2022
Ahead of its latest fourth-quarter earnings release, Ookla released its third-quarter results. The company is behind the popular SpeedTest service, a speed measurement software. The third quarter report reveals the list of the five fastest 5G mobile phones in the US. As of Q3 2022, the top 5 mobile phones are all from Samsung and Apple.
Apparently, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro were the fastest 5G devices on the US market at the time, ahead of the Samsung devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 was Samsung’s fastest 5G device in the US, followed by the Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra.
In the third quarter of 2022, the download speed of Apple’s high-end iPhone models was quite impressive. iPhone 14 Pro Max recorded an average download speed of 177 Mbit/s. It beats Samsung’s flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, with an average download speed of 162 Mbps in the US. But when it comes to download speed, the difference between high-end iPhone models and Samsung Galaxy devices is huge. Samsung’s average download speed was terrible, with the fastest medians below 20 Mbps.
Internet speed varies depending on the network
Ookla notes that 5G speeds will vary by network, as the list does not differentiate data by network. When it comes to internet speed, Brazil and China have twice the download and upload speeds of the US.
If we compare Q3 and Q4 device speeds, there is a general drop in download speed across all devices. Additionally, Apple devices now have lower download speeds in the fourth quarter compared to Q3. As Ookla does not disclose the network for the test, there may be network variation in the test.
