Cheapest Galaxy – Top for Phones

Samsung Galaxy A04s is the first Galaxy A smartphone in the “x4” series.
Thus, it succeeds the Galaxy A03 and becomes the cheapest smartphone of the South Korean manufacturer.

Announced at €179 when it went on sale in October 2022, its price has now dropped significantly.

In mid-January 2023, you can find the Samsung Galaxy A04s (SM-A047F/DSN) for €135.

But what is this entry-level device really worth?

To find out, I invite you to read the entire test below.

Best deals right now:

1. Aesthetics: known design

The Galaxy A04s is largely based on the design of the Galaxy A13.

The body uses glossy coated polycarbonate with a fingerprint-imitating finish.
On paper, this works great, but the smartphone retains fingerprints, especially on the black version used in our test.
The Galaxy A04s is also available in white.

The 6.5-inch Infinity-V display occupies 81% of the front panel
The screen is equipped with an earpiece and light and proximity sensors.
The front camera sits in the teardrop notch at the top of the screen.

On the other hand, there is no notification LED here.

The top edge of the phone gives way to the surround microphone, while the bottom edge houses the mini-jack, main microphone input, USB-C port and speaker grill.

On the left side there is a SIM / micro SD drawer (2 nano SIM or 1 nano-SIM + 1 micro SD).
On the right side is the volume rocker and power button.
The latter is equipped with a fingerprint reader.

Turn the phone over to find the photo module, which combines 3 separate sensors placed vertically in the upper left corner.
These are accompanied by an LED flash.

Below we see the Samsung brand, as well as the trash can and CE certification logos.

2. Picture and sound: dim screen

The Galaxy A04s is equipped with a large 6.5-inch PLS LCD display in a 20:9 format.

For less than 140 euros, you should not expect Full HD + resolution. We’ll have to settle for HD+.

The good news is that this screen benefits from a variable refresh rate between 60 and 90 Hz, which can be locked at 60 Hz if needed.

Colors are beautiful and viewing angles are properly wide.

It has a 2.9 Delta E, which is pretty good for a smartphone at this price point.

The 407 nit brightness will allow you to consult the device’s screen outdoors, but it will be somewhat limited in direct sunlight.

Especially thanks to the 20:9 format, watching videos on the Samsung Galaxy A04s screen will be quite pleasant.

The sound provided by the main speaker is very correct and quite strong (118 db measured at the output).

The manufacturer decided to equip this smartphone with a mini-jack.
Listening to headphones also offers good sound quality.

The sound output during the call is quite satisfactory. We understand his reporter.

  • Display : 6.5 inches (PLS LCD) with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, that is, a density of 270 pixels per inch.
  • His: Mini-jack socket and mono speaker. A classic headset.

3. Performance: pretty decent

For its Galaxy A04s, Samsung uses an in-house processor etched at 8 nm: the Exynos 850.
This SoC is already equipped with the Galaxy A13 (4G). It is paired with 3GB of RAM and a Mali-G52 MP1 GPU.

Against our usual benchmarks, our tester scored 128,224 points on Antutu and 164 points on Geekbench 5. single core and 800 points multi-core.

Especially thanks to the Mali-G52, the daily use of this smartphone is not unpleasant at all, and overall it is effective in terms of graphics performance.

If it’s not lightning, our test smartphone managed to display 29 FPS with low-resource 2D and 3D games during our gaming sessions.

Of the announced 32 GB of storage, only 19.2 GB will actually be available to the user.
However, this storage can be easily expanded by adding a micro SD card (+1 TB), without sacrificing one of the two nano-SIM cards.

  • Antutu Benchmark (v9.5.2): 128,224 points |
  • Processor: 8 Exynos 850 cores (4 x 2.0 GHz + 4 x 2.0 GHz) | RAM: 3GB | GPU: Mali-G52 MP1
  • Storage Memory: 32GB of storage, which becomes 19.2GB on first boot.

4. Communication: total… or can be said

These Samsung Galaxy A04s lack 5G network compatibility to have full connectivity. But for €135, you can’t ask for much!

So here we have 4G (Vo)LTE category 7 with all the bands needed for full use in France and Europe more broadly.

Obviously we also have 2G and 3G+.

Like any smartphone worthy of the name, the Galaxy A04s offers a whole other connectivity package: Bluetooth (5.0), Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n/ac), (A)GPS/ Glonass/BDS /Galileo/ QZSS, mini-jack slot, USB-C (OTG) port, two nano-SIM slots, micro SD slot, as well as an NFC chip.

Network hooks are good on 2G, 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi.
For GPS, in the courtyard of an urban condominium, our test smartphone took 10 seconds to acquire the first fix (20 satellites).

level sensorsThe Samsung Galaxy A04s has an accelerometer and light and proximity sensors.
Therefore, this smartphone should work without compass and gyroscope.

Security has not been forgotten, as Galaxy A04s can be unlocked in two ways: face unlock (facial recognition) and through the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button.
Either way, it’s quick and effective.

  • SAR (Specific Absorption Rate): 0.52 W/kg in the head. This is a very good score for the first budget mobile phone to be released in late 2022.

5. Operating system: updated system

One UI is one of the favorite interfaces of many smartphone users.

Here it comes in the latest One UI Core 5.0 version, which is based on Android 13.
This binomial is very nice for everyday use.

At the app level, there are four Microsoft apps, as well as Spotify and Netflix, in addition to a suite of G-Apps and Samsung apps.

In addition to the dark mode and app drawer, you can replace the 3 normal Android buttons with a gesture system.

  • Operating system : Android 13 | Overlap: One UI Core 5.0

6. Use: the right photos

The Galaxy A04s lets you make calls, check emails, send SMS, GPS navigation, play non-demanding 2D and 3D games, watch videos, play MP3s, and more. allows

However, there are two aspects where smartphones can always stand out: photo quality and autonomy.

The Galaxy A04s rear camera is entrusted to 3 sensors: a 50-megapixel wide-angle main lens at f/1.8, a 2 MP macro lens at f/2.4, and a 2 MP depth sensor at f/2.4. .

It uses the main sensor of the Samsung Galaxy A04s pixel binding delivering lighter 12.5 megapixel images.

When there is light, the results of this smartphone are far from disastrous, at least if we consider the photo as a whole.

At night, a significant smoothing is felt, and the treatment tends to deform small elements, even erasing the smallest details.

The Galaxy A04s offers portrait mode.
Bokeh effect can be customized by metering and then it is possible to change the effect.

The main lens allows shooting in Full HD at 30 FPS without stabilization.

Allows you to take the device selfies 5 megapixels, also with portrait mode, but with a significant lack of smoothing and sharpness.

The Galaxy A04s is equipped with a large 5000 mAh battery that will last for 2 days without recharging, and that’s under reasonable mixed usage conditions.

The battery supports 15W fast charging.

Note that Samsung does not provide any charger in the box. Only a USB-C to USB-C cable is available.

With a compatible cable and charger, our test smartphone took 2 hours and 20 minutes to charge from 1 to 100%.

Finally, a 60-minute video (all connections active, volume 50%, brightness 50%, screen refresh rate adjusted) will drain 11% of the battery.

  • Rear camera: 50MP+2MP+2MP.
  • Front camera: 5MP.
  • Battery: Fixed 5000 mAh.

Conclusion: there is no shortage of benefits

For its price, the Samsung Galaxy A04s is not devoid of advantages.
It certainly has a screen that is not very bright, but we appreciate the 90 Hz refresh rate, it proves that it can handle general games in good conditions and it offers excellent autonomy.

Entry-level smartphones often struggle to deliver satisfactory photo results, and the Galaxy A04s is no exception to the rule.

The Galaxy A04s gives those who are confident with the Samsung tag a chance to get in at a lower price with a few concessions.
