During a challenging campaign, footballers face teams with different attributes, abilities and playing styles. Only the sharpest and most versatile can adapt to league football and put the finishing touches on it week after week.
Today, we’re going to take a look at some excellent strikers who have consistently produced in their home divisions since 2020. Below are the top 10 goalscorers in the league since the start of the decade:

#10 Lionel Messi – 56 goals
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) footballer Lionel Messi has scored 56 goals in 96 league games since 2020.
Messi, who helped Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in December, won the Pichichi Trophy after scoring 25 goals in La Liga in the 2019-20 season. His total 12 goals were scored in 2020.
In the 2020-21 season, Messi scored 30 goals in 35 matches in La Liga. FC Barcelona fails to win the Spanish championship, but Messi retains the Pichichi trophy. The following season at PSG, Messi scored just 6 times in 26 Ligue 1 matches as the Parisians won the Ligue 1 title.
This season, he has already scored 8 goals and 10 assists in 15 matches.
#9 Wissam Ben Yedder – 61 goals
AS Monaco centre-forward Wissam Ben Yedder has become the French side’s top scorer in Ligue 1 since 2020 with 61 goals in 100 league games.
Ben Yedder, who moved to “Monaco” in July 2019, scored 18 goals in 26 games in Ligue 1 in his debut season. Five of these achievements were achieved in the second half of the 2019-20 season. The following season, he scored 20 goals in 37 games to help Monaco finish third. In the 2021-22 season, Ben Yedder recorded his best performance with 25 goals in 37 matches.
Ben Yedder has also performed well in Ligue 1 this season, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists in 16 games.
#8 Mohamed Salah – 62 goals
“Liverpool” forward Mohamed Salah has scored 62 goals in 108 games in the top league of English football since 2020.
In the 2019-20 season, Salah scored 19 times in 34 games and Liverpool won their 19th league title. 10 of his 19 goals were scored in the second half of the 2019-20 season, in 2020. In the next season, Salah scored 22 times in 37 games. He scored 23 goals in 35 games in the 2021–22 season, losing the title race to Manchester City by one point.
The Egyptian national team scored only 7 goals and provided 4 assists in 18 games this season.
#7 Harry Kane – 62 goals
Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the Premier League since 2020, scoring 62 goals in 101 games.
Kane scored 18 league goals in 29 games in the 2019–20 season, with seven of his goals coming in 2020. The following season, he scored 23 goals in 35 games and won the Golden Boot award. In the 2021–22 season, Kane started the season slowly but picked up the pace in the second half, scoring 17 goals in 37 games.
Kane is sharper than ever this season with 15 goals and one assist in 17 Premier League games.
#6 Karim Benzema – 67 goals
Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema has established himself as the club’s undoubted talisman in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era. Since January 2020, the Frenchman has scored 67 times in 95 matches in La Liga as part of the “Black and White” team.
In the 2019–20 season, Benzema scored 21 goals and provided eight assists in 37 games as Real Madrid won La Liga. 9 of his goals in the 2019-20 La Liga season came in 2020. In the following season, Benzema scored 23 goals and provided 9 assists in 34 La Liga games, but Madrid failed to retain the title, Atletico Madrid won.
The 2021-22 season was the best season of Benzema’s career. He scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists in 32 games. The former France international has been very sharp this season as well, scoring 8 goals and providing one assist in 9 La Liga appearances so far.
#5 Cristiano Ronaldo – 69 goals
Cristiano Ronaldo, the latest transfer of “Al Nassr”, scored 69 goals in 93 league games in the first five divisions of Europe from January 2020 to November 2023.
The Portuguese superstar scored 31 goals in 33 Serie A games in the 2019-20 season, including 21 goals in the second half of the 2020 season. Juventus won Serie A that year, but Ronaldo missed out on the top scorer award.
The following season, he scored 29 goals in 33 games to win the top scorer title, but missed out on the Serie A title. He moved to Manchester United the following season and scored 18 goals in 30 games in the English top flight.
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse under Eric ten Haag in the 2022–23 season and he left the club in November after scoring just one goal in 10 league games.
#4 Ciro Immobile – 73 goals
Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is Serie A’s top scorer this decade with 73 goals in 101 league games.
In the 2019-20 season, Immobile scored 36 goals in 37 games and won the top scorer title. An impressive 19 of his 36 goals came in the second half of the 2019-20 season.
In the following season, Immobile’s performance dropped significantly, with 20 goals in 35 games. Last season, Immobile scored 27 goals in 31 games and became the division’s top scorer again.
Immobile, who is currently injured in the thigh area, has scored 7 goals in 15 games this season.
#3 Kylian Mbappe – 75 goals
Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe is hot on the heels of Ligue 1 defenders, scoring 75 goals in 91 league games since 2020.
In the 2019-20 season, Mbappe scored 18 goals in 20 games. In the second half of the 2020–21 season, he had seven goals and two assists in 2020. He won the top scorer that season.
In the 2020-21 League 1 campaign, Mbappe scored 27 times in 31 games. PSG missed out on the league title, but Mbappe retained his top scorer title. Last season, Mbappe scored 28 goals in 35 games to win his fourth consecutive top scorer title and help PSG win their 10th Ligue 1 title.
This year, Mbappe is in excellent form. The author of 13 goals and two assists in 17 matches confirmed himself as the top scorer in the division.
#2 Erling Haaland – 83 goals
The youngest player on this list, Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland has scored an impressive 83 goals in 84 league games since 2020.
Haaland moved from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. Between January and June, he scored 13 times in 15 games. In the next season, he scored 27 times in 28 matches. In his last season at Dortmund, Haaland scored 22 times in 24 matches in the Bundesliga.
Haaland was in a class of his own in the Premier League. Haaland has so far scored 21 goals and 3 assists in 17 matches in the English Premier League and is the division’s top scorer. He needed only 14 matches to reach 20 goals. No player in history has reached this milestone before.
#1 Robert Lewandowski – 104 goals
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 104 goals in 92 games since 2020, is sitting pretty at the top of the table.
Lewandowski, who moved from “Bayern” to “Barca” last summer, scored 34 times in the 2019-20 season, including 15 goals in 2020. The following season, he upped the ante by scoring 41 goals in just 29 league appearances.
Finally, he scored 35 times in 34 games in the 2021-22 season. Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga three times this season, with Lewandowski winning the top scorer award in each campaign.
The Pole also proved himself in Barcelona, where he scored 13 goals in 15 games.
