L’ethanedial a organic compound (A chemical compound is called an organic compound when it contains at least one carbon atom…) formula OCHCHO. This liquid color (Color is the eye’s subjective perception of one or more wave frequencies…) yellow is the smallest dialdehyde available.

Production and synthesis

Etandial commercial (A salesperson is a person whose business is related to sales.) or prepared by oxidation phase (The word phase can have several meanings, it is used in several fields and…) gaseous ethylene glycol, catalyzessilver (Silver or silver metal is a chemical element with the symbol Ag — du…) even copper (Copper is a chemical element with symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Copper…)or by liquid-phase oxidation of ethanal in the presence ofnitric acid (Nitric acid, sometimes called nitric acid, is a liquid chemical compound…). Total production capacity is around 220,000 tonnes/year and production has declined due to overcapacity in Asia. Most of the production is done in the gas phase. The first manufacturer of ethanedial was located in Lamotte, France, which is now owned by Clariant. Today, manufacturing is largely dominant BASF (BASF is a German chemical group and the largest chemical group in the world. Headquartered in…) in Ludwigshafen, Germany. They reach 60 thousand tons per year. There are only two production sites America (America is a separate continent from Asia in the west and…) (Geismer in California and Charlotte in North Carolina). China has recently acquired additional production capacity.

In the laboratory, ethanol is synthesized by oxidation of ethanolacid (An acid is a chemical compound generally defined by its reactions…) selenium. It is carried out by the preparation of anhydrous ethandial heating (Heating is the act of transferring heat energy to an object, a…) with the pentoxide of the hydrates of this compound phosphorus (Phosphorus is a chemical element of the pnictogen family, symbol P and…) in a device with a recapacitor.

Ethanial solution

It’s confusing provided (Fournoi Korséon (Greek: Φούρνοι…) usually in a 40% concentrated aqueous solution. Like other small aldehydes, it forms hydrates. Moreover, these hydrates condense to form a series of oligomers, the structure of which is still poorly understood. For most applications, the exact structure is irrelevant. At least two ethanedial hydrates are commercially available:

  • ethanedial dimer, dihydrate: [(CHO)2]2[H2O]21,4-dioxane-trans-2,3-diol (CAS#) 4845-50-5pf 91 hour 95 °C)
  • ethanedial trimer, dihydrate:: [(CHO)2]3(H2O)2 (JOB## 4405-13-4).

It is estimated that at concentrations below 1 mol/L, ethanedial exists mainly in monomeric form, namely: OCHCHO, OCHCH(OH)2or (HO)2CHCH(OH)2. At concentrations above 1 mol/L, the predominant form is the dimer. These dimers are probably dioxalanes with the formula [(HO)CH]2He2CHCHO. Dimers and trimers may precipitate due to their low solubility in cold solutions 4.4 °C.

use it

industries paper (Paper (from Latin papyrus) is a material made of fibers…) and large amounts of ethanedial are used in textiles to play (The cheek is the part of the face that covers the oral cavity…) role of crosslinking agent for formulations fromstarch (Starch (Latin amylum, unmilled) is a complex carbohydrate (polysaccharide)…). It is also the initiator of urea, which is used in chemical treatments that increase resistance to wrinkles. Ethanedial serves as a solvent and cross-linking agent chemistry (Chemistry is a natural science divided into several specialties,…) polymers:

  • proteins (leather tanning)
  • collagen (Collagen is a family of fibrous proteins that make up connective tissues…)
  • cellulose derivatives (textiles)
  • hydrocolloids
  • starch

is a good mediator Organic chemistry (Organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the scientific study of…), especially for the synthesis of heterocycles such as imidazoles. One form of the reagent used in the laboratory is the bis-hemiacetal with ethylene glycol, 1,4-dioxane-2,3-diol. This compound is commercially available.
