Winter sales 2023: good high-tech plans
The 2023 winter sales start this Wednesday, January 11. Opportunity, as always, to make good deals, especially high-tech. If you see real promotions and react quickly! Here is a selection of the first offers available with bonus promo codes for lower prices.
Like every year in January, we go to winter discounts again! After a noisy but disappointing Black Friday 2022 and the inevitable year-end celebrations, promotions will increase for several weeks in all areas, including high-tech. As always, merchants will compete with big discounters to attract customers, liquidate their stock and increase their turnover. For consumers, it will be an opportunity to take advantage of smarter pricing to buy all kinds of products at cheaper prices. As long as you compare prices well – between stores, as well as pre-transaction prices – and you’re not stuck anywhere, because the real deals disappear from the counters very quickly. Some online merchants don’t hesitate to offer their products on their sites at discounted prices when only very limited quantities are available. A popular knock-off technique that sometimes encourages people to buy without thinking… Therefore, despite the gloomy conditions around, it is better not to hang around – general inflation slows down the enjoyment… – and the new law regulating sales and displayed prices, especially on high-tech products is very good there are deals.
What are the dates for the 2023 winter sales?
In France, sales are strictly regulated by law, in particular their dates and duration are determined at the national level. So the 2023 winter sales start this Wednesday, January 11 at 8am, for four weeks (compared to the previous six), i.e. until midnight on Tuesday, February 7 in most French departments and territories. Please note that some departments, such as the Vosges and Moselle, as well as the outer territories, are subject to phased dates. Additional discounts, which in principle correspond to when the best deals can be had, usually occur in the second and third weeks of the sale – but each merchant is free to start them whenever they want. Therefore, they should be held on January 18 and then on January 25.
Winter sales 2023: tougher rules to protect consumers
Of course, all major brands have sales, sometimes bundled with “good deals,” “flash sales,” and other promotions that can be confusing. Merchant sites are actively participating in this widespread clearance sale, experimenting in almost all departments, especially high-tech. We should also mention that sales sometimes also apply to refurbished products, which allows for great savings, as we have seen in previous editions.
However, the 2023 winter sales take place in a very special context. First, they come after three special years marked by the Covid pandemic, which has led to behavior change with arrests and health measures. Then, amid increased year-round promotions and special deals, sales are less attractive than in the past. Especially since many consumers are concerned about incentives for overconsumption and impulse buying, favoring eco-responsible actions and long-lasting goods. In addition, concerns about the international situation, with inflation accelerating from the beginning of 2022 and the resulting decline in purchasing power, sentiment is not getting feverish, especially after spending on gifts. The components that have marked the last few years – even if they tend to fall – have severely limited the “natural” erosion of the prices of high-tech products, which tend to stagnate when they do not increase.
Above all, it is the general climate that risks changing the situation in this particular period. So, despite the clamor of traders who communicated more than ever about the transaction, the last Black Friday did not turn out to be the expected success. Tired of this excess or worried about the economic situation? Still, the question will come up again during the winter sales. Some may not want to equip themselves ahead of possible price hikes in the coming months, while others may prefer to keep their savings for other purposes. Especially since many increases have been announced or implemented in 2023, whether for fuel, electricity, gas, transport, streaming video services, mobile phone plans or Internet subscriptions…
In addition, a small “detail” has recently changed the game. From May 28, 2022, new rules will regulate merchant practices, especially displayed prices, which should no longer refer to inflated and fictitious strikeout prices (see our article). As consumer associations such as UFC-Que Choisir have already condemned several times, some merchants did not hesitate to adjust their prices to the “list price” or “recommended price” a few days or weeks before the sale. It is never applied to artificially show more discounts. This deceptive practice is now strictly prohibited, and that’s good!
Remember that sales only apply to pre-sale items, not special occasion items. Additionally, contrary to popular belief, off-the-shelf devices benefit from the same warranties as others. Thus, they can be repaired in the event of a fault, but can be returned during the withdrawal period without providing any explanation, especially if purchased remotely, especially on online sales sites (see our information sheet on the right of withdrawal).
